Time heals, time squanders, time reaps, time wonders, but mostly time seeps with direction unspecified. On my birthday, the final before a significant bump, I’m pondering what path I’m careening toward … least resistance? settled tranquility? barbed wires and damp sheets? Maybe all three. But, … I do know one thing. I still love construction. Making. Building. So, as I peer the Brooklyn Bridge from the subway on this grey rain swept morning, I have joy in my heart that I’m still working, still creating. This new song is the first in a year long set, arriving once (or twice) a month. “We Went Walking” is one of my favorite types of songs, one that arrived in a flash. Was recorded on my iPhone minutes later, and turned into a beast in the studio by the hands of Mike Ratti, Al Maddy, and Jesse Barnes. Committed to 2” tape on a hot summer night. It’s long, and it’s complicated— just like the times it’s living in. Hope you enjoy. Peace.
lyrics
Walking, in a line parade
People staring at the sand for days
Walking
The burner’s set for making
But they ain’t waiting, they’re just taking
Loose lips, sidecar flips
The poetry’s not waking
Searchlights positioned to stave the
armed robbery
Guests arrived, stopped their stride
And cut the electricity
Set the bar, lock them chains
When needers’ knock, the fact remains
You only have yourself to blame
When this whole world’s gone insane
"God, guns and glory
-#speedball and his worries"
Glued to the bathroom stall
All that’s left to tell the story
Baptists and heathens nod their heads in sympathy
Suggest in better times
There might be room for thee
When it’s your turn, state your name
When this whole world’s gone insane
We went walking
We stopped talking
They weren’t knocking
We went walking
We went walking
Out by the ransom tree
Sanctimonious talking
At a parting of the breeze
A sideways sparrow
Stumbled into view
We went walking
Set the bar lock them chains
When needers’ knock, the fact remains
You only have yourself to blame
When this whole world’s gone insane
We went walking
