This is our final entry of the 2021’s single of the month. I’ve been experiencing writer’s block as of late, and have several instrumentals I haven’t been able to finish with lyrics. In search of a break, I decided to devote this final song of ’21, lyrically anyways, to the process of writing. I also decided to make the first line something I wouldn’t write myself in a million years. Paint myself in a hole if you will (style points if you can guess who I ripped off as soon as ya hear it). I also decided to dig deep into AM radio— where I came from musically. Creation isn’t always easy, but pulling something from nothing is, for me, the greatest feeling there is in life. I try and teach that in classrooms, onstage, and in every aspect of life. To me, to not create is not an option— and this is one of the things that has kept me sane thru all this.
In the end, we didn’t make all 12, flood’s, Covid, etc., but what we did felt pretty special in the face of everything. The four Sinner’s actually got in a room together for the first time in almost two years a couple weeks back. We’ve been fragmenting stuff for a long while. Recording this and that piecemeal, and grabbing some stuff online … I learned a ton over the course of the year. Special shoutouts to Mitch Raftery for adding vocals and keys, Ivan Julian for guitars, pianos, and answering the phone at all hours of the day, Isaac Gerard for dutifully and creatively manning the boards, and the crew at SuperGiraffe Sound/17 Frost for keeping the lights on.
Hell yes, we’re doing this again in ’22. See ya next month.
W/Them Sinners
lyrics
I woke up
in love
This morning
That much is true
Don’t say those things to me
I go along willingly
Because I know
By the afternoon we’re through
Yesterday I lost my mind
I can’t write another line
For awhile
December’s Child
True words from one to four
Came knocking at my door
Then you blamed the start
The part that split the verse’s heart
Yesterday was killing time
Tomorrow expects faults and mines
For awhile
Just take me to a place
Where I can breathe and erase
The sound
Before it drags me under
